1: Water, water and water
We all know that feeling when you wake up after a big night and a few too many. Dry eyes, mouth like sandpaper and a throbbing headache. Dehydration is a big part of any hangover. This is because alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it makes you go to the toilet…a lot.
The cure for this hangover symptom is an easy one. Drink water. Drink water between each alcoholic drink. Drink water before bed. Drink water when you wake up. Sports drinks are great the next morning to help boost your hydration levels.
However, dehydration does not cause a hangover, it only makes one worse. So while “drinking water” may not be a hangover cure, it definitely helps to reduce your symptoms.
2: Vitamin Bae
Yep, Vitamin B. We all need Vitamin B to keep our body functioning and our metabolism running. Vitamin B truly is Bae.
When you drink, the alcohol flushes all your body’s Vitamin B reserves down the toilet. literally. It can be beneficial to have a Vitamin B supplement the next morning to get you back into good spirits and reduce the recovery time of your hangover.
A supplement labeled as Vitamin B Complex is best. This means that it contains the entire spectrum of Vitamin B. All the way from B1 to B12.
3: The Korean Pear?
That’s right, the pear can save you from your hangover. However these aren’t your standard pears. The Korean Pear is a bit different to the ones we’re used to. They are a hard, round fruit with crispy flesh and light, sweet taste.
In fact according to the CSIRO. The Korean Pear has long been used as a traditional remedy for alcohol hangover and the effect has been seen from consuming 220ml Korean pear juice before you start drinking.
This is due to the pears ability to activate and supercharge the natural enzymes present in your liver that are responsible for processing the nasty chemical Acetaldehyde, a by-product of alcohol.
Why is this important? Because Acetaldehyde is the reason hangovers exist. Acetaldehyde is the chemical cousin to Formaldehyde (yes, the chemical they use to preserve dead bodies!).
It’s the ultimate pre-drink.
4: The Oriental Raisin Tree?
You might not have heard about this one. The Oriental Raisin Tree is a tree, in Asia, that grows raisin-like fruit. Big surprise.
Whats really special about this tree though is that the fruit is high in a compound called Dihydromyricetin, or DHM for short. DHM has a double affect when reducing your hangover.
DHM, like the Korean Pear, activates those enzymes to help process the nasty chemical Acetaldehyde responsible for causing your hangover.
Do you ever wake up early when hungover? Have trouble getting back to sleep and feeling generally restless and anxious? This is because alcohol is a depressant and the levels of Glutamine (a stimulant) are completely wiped out after a few drinks. To compensate, when you sleep after a big night, your brain goes into overdrive producing Glutamine.
DHM counteracts this by regulating the levels of glutamine in your brain, helping you to get a better sleep and reducing that hangxiety! Truly a miracle ingredient.
Need I say more? The classic hangover cure is the greasy kebab at 3am or the full english the next morning. A strong coffee, a cold fruit smoothie or my personal favourite, a bacon and egg roll. Basically any food is going to help reduce the hangover and make you feel cured.
